Garden Flower Cake

How to Make a Mother's Day Garden Flower Cake: A Fun Baking Project for Kids

Ingredients

  • Store-bought chocolate loaf cake (or make your own with a cake mix or your favorite cake recipe)
  • Edible flowers (like pansies, violets, or marigolds)
  • Chocolate wafers (for the garden bed)
  • A small wooden scoop or decorative garden tool (cleaned and washed)
  • Chocolate frosting (store bought or make your own)

Method

  1. Frost the Cake: Evenly spread chocolate frosting over the top and sides of the cake. This will be the "mud" for planting your flower garden.

  2. Add the 'Soil': Sprinkle chocolate cookie crumbs over the frosted top to create the look of soil. Make sure it's well-covered to give a full earthy effect. We crushed Oreo cookies for the crumbs. Place cookies (twist them and remove the white filling) in a zipper plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
  3. Decorate with Edible Flowers: Now for the fun part—decorating with edible flowers! Place them gently into the 'soil' to mimic a blooming garden.
  4. Create the Garden Bed: To form the garden bed, vertically line chocolate wafers around the edges of the cake.
  5. Add the Finishing Touch: (Optional) Place a small wooden scoop on top of the cake to enhance the garden theme. It’s a cute detail that brings the whole look together.
  6. Enjoy the Presentation: Present your Mother’s Day flower garden cake on a serving plate surrounded by additional flowers for extra decoration. This makes a beautiful centerpiece for your Mother’s Day celebration.
