Honey Butter Apple Toast

Learn how to make crispy Japanese honey butter apple toast filled with chunky applesauce and coated in a rich cinnamon butter glaze. A simple, delicious treat perfect for any season.

Ingredients

  • 16 slices of white sandwich bread (we used Japanese bread)
  • 1 ½ cups melted, unsalted butter
  • ⅓ cup + 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce (you can make your own* or jarred)

Method

  1. Prep your ovenPreheat to 160°C (325°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Trim the breadCut off the crusts from each slice for a cleaner finish and even texture.
  3. Make the butter brown sugar mixIn a bowl, stir together melted butter, honey, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth and glossy.
  4. Assemble the toast Spoon 1 tablespoon of applesauce onto the center of one bread slice. Top with another slice and press gently—just enough to seal it but not squish the filling out.
  5. Dip and coat Dip the sandwich into the honey butter mixture, making sure every side is soaked and coated well.
  6. Bake and flipPlace your coated toasts on the tray and bake for 10 minutes. Carefully flip and bake the other side for another 8–10 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Cool and crispLet the toasts cool completely. They’ll firm up and develop that signature caramelized crunch.
  8. Tip: These are best enjoyed the day they’re made, but can be reheated in a toaster oven to bring back the crunch.

Notes

*To make easy chunky applesauce, peel and chop 4–6 apples (mix sweet and tart), then simmer them in a pot with ½ cup water, 1–2 tablespoons brown sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of salt for about 15–20 minutes until soft. Mash with a fork for a chunky texture and stir in a splash of lemon juice for brightness.
