Summer is coming and these sandal sandwiches are the perfect snack to pack to the beach or outdoor summer outings!
We know one thing’s for sure, we’re ready for sandal wearing weather! Something that would go well with the warmer weather are these cute, little sandal sandwiches.
These would be the perfect food addition to a summer birthday party, maybe even spa-themed celebration, afternoon snack, appetizer, or lunch. The mini sandwich size makes it a cute party platter you can bring along with a new twist on classic afternoon tea sandwiches.
Since the kids always want to help in the kitchen, these would be the perfect opportunity for them to do so. They might need a little assistance with cutting any sandal straps depending on their age, but they could easily assemble the sandwiches and use the cookie cutter.
What are some substitutions you could make to the sandwiches?
Rather than ham, the sandal sandwiches could easily be turkey, roast beef, salami, peanut butter and jelly, or honey and banana.
Keep in mind when the sandwich becomes a sweeter, more savory sandwich, you’ll want to change the sandal straps and center to any variety of fruit.
What foods can I use for sandal straps?
For the straps you could use cut fruit like:
- peaches
- mandarin oranges
- bananas.
Or you could also use pretzels, or fruit bar strips. You’ll simply have to slice the fruit to resemble a sandal strap.
Some ideas for the middle of the strap include blueberries, raspberries, sliced grapes, fruit leather or fruit bars.
Other substitutions for the sandwich straps when making your sandwich with meat and cheese, could be:
- bell pepper
- slices, celery
- pretzel sticks
- sliced cheese strips.
Yes, you can also use your favorite sliced bread, whole wheat, white, sourdough, whichever the kids would normally eat and enjoy.
How do you store these sandwiches if serving for a party or later event?
You can easily prep these sandwiches several hours ahead of serving. If you want to leave the sandal strap and center until just before serving, just prepare the sandwiches, place them on a plate and wrap tightly with plastic wrap for optimum freshness and place them in the fridge.
Sandal Sandwiches – Ingredients:
Sliced Bread
Sliced Deli Ham or Turkey
Sliced Cheese
Mini Peppers
Mini Cucumbers
Cream Cheese (optional)
How do you make sandal sandwiches?
Prepare your sandwiches as you normally would, deli ham and cheese between two slices of bread. Using your sandal cookie cutter, press into the center of each sandwich, making sure to get through all of the layers.
Slice and deseed mini peppers. Slice 2 thin pieces to resemble the strap of the sandal. Slice mini cucumber and cut into small squares or another shape. Using a toothpick place a small amount of cream cheese on the back of cucumber so it stays in place (optional). Place on top of peppers, in the center where they meet at the top to resemble a sandal strap.
So no food goes to waste, keep the extra sandwich pieces and cut into small squares and eat as finger sandwiches, make homemade croutons with the excess bread, or maybe you live in an area with animals that would enjoy the bread crumbs!
