You can make them ahead of time and store them in the freezer until you’re ready to serve.

Some supermarkets sell donut holes already made, so all you need to do is dip them in chocolate and decorate them.

They’re also a great activity for kids! Get them involved in decorating the “acorns” and they’ll have a blast. You can make a game out of it and see who can make the most creative design.

Many people are familiar with the classic acorn shape, but you can also get creative and make them into other festive shapes! Let’s get started!

Donut Hole Acorns: The Perfect Fall Treat

Donut hole acorns are the perfect fall treat! They are so easy to make, and they are a great way to use up those extra ingredients that you might have lying around.

They are also perfect for fall – they have a sweet donut flavor that reminds me of all the best things about autumn. And finally, they are super cute and festive!

Decorate them with some chocolate and sprinkles, and you’ve got yourself a perfect fall treat. This year, make donut hole acorns your go-to fall dessert!

You Will Need:

  • 1 dozen donut holes
  • 1 – 1 ½ cups chocolate chips, melted
  • Assorted fall-colored sprinkles mixed together
  • Pretzel sticks broken in half

How to Create Delicious Donut Hole Acorns

Step 1: Mix Together the Sprinkles

Start by mixing together some assorted fall-colored sprinkles in a shallow dish. Then, melt 1-1½ cups of chocolate chips in the microwave, stirring until it’s smooth.

Dip the top ¼ of each donut hole into the chocolate, reserving some for later use. You can use a small spoon to help spread it around if necessary.

This will be the “glue” that will hold the sprinkles in place.

Step 2: Roll the Donuts around to Make the “Acorn”

Next, roll each dipped portion of the donut in your chosen sprinkle mixture. Place the donut holes on an ungreased baking sheet and allow them to set while still soft.

If you’re in a hurry, you can pop them in the fridge for about 15 minutes. This will help the chocolate harden faster.

While the chocolate is still sticky, you can press additional sprinkles into the surface if desired.

Step 3:  Add the Acorns Stem

Once they’re set, break half a pretzel stick and insert it as a stem on each acorn. Once you have done this, place the acorns on a plate and dig in!

If you have chocolate left over, you can drizzle it over top for extra decoration.

Some other fun mix-ins you could try are crushed candy canes, ground nuts, or even toffee bits. If you want to get clever, try dipping the bottom of the donut hole in white chocolate.

Fun Toppings for Your Donut Hole Acorns

Chopped Nuts

Chopped nuts add a bit of crunch to your donut holes. They also give them a more sophisticated flavor that grownups will love.

Pecans work great for this, but feel free to use any type of nut you like. Many people also like to use chopped peanuts, walnuts, or almonds.

Shredded Coconut

For a tropical twist, try shredded coconut. It’s a unique topping that will make your donut holes stand out from the rest. Just be sure to toast the coconut first so it doesn’t get too soggy.

Coconut also pairs well with chocolate, so feel free to drizzle on some extra melted chocolate.

Mini Marshmallows

Mini marshmallows are perfect for those who like their donut holes on the sweeter side.

You can even toast them for a bit of extra flavor. If you really want to get creative, you can dip the marshmallows in melted chocolate before topping your donut holes.

Reese’s Pieces

Mini Reese’s Pieces are another classic topping that goes great on donut holes. The peanut butter flavor pairs perfectly with the fried dough.

If you can’t find Reese’s Pieces, you can also use tiny M&M’s or even chopped-up Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Candy Canes

Crushed candy canes are a great way to add some holiday flavor to your acorns. You can use any type of candy cane, from peppermint to cinnamon.

If you want to get really extra, try dipping your acorns in white chocolate and then rolling them in crushed candy canes.
