Can you make the owl pancakes from scratch?

Of course! Anything homemade is always better, right? If you want to make up your own homemade pancakes and use them, go for it! I only use the pre-made mini round pancakes when I’m running low on time. They save quite a few minutes and just make my job that much easier.

Valentine Pancake Owls – Ingredients

  • mini pancakes (we used frozen mini pancakes but you can make your own)
  • candy googly eyes
  • apples
  • heart sprinkles
  • strawberries (optional as garnish)

Tips For Making Valentine Pancake Owls

One of my biggest tips for making these owl pancakes is to let the kids join in on the fun. While I do love to make them and surprise them sometimes, I’m also happy to have them join me in the kitchen as well.

They’ll love being able to put together their own owls and then enjoy every single bite, too.

Another tip is to go ahead and prep ahead as much as you can. This would include washing the apples and cutting them up so that the kids can just take over and do the fun part of decorating.

If you do happen to have any pancakes leftover, make certain that you store them separately from the fruit. If you don’t, the pancakes will absorb some of the liquid and the smell of the apples as well and this might not be the best flavor and taste.

Instructions

  • Lay out your pancakes on a plate and garnish with heart shaped strawberries (optional). We used a heart cookie cutter but if you don't have one, just cut a heart shape with a sharp knife.
  • Cut your apple features - two slivers of skin for wings, two small triangles for ears, and one more for the nose.
  • Add the apple features, then the eyes, followed by two heart sprinkles for feet.
