How do you make chocolate strawberry hearts?

This easy treat can’t be any simpler with no baking and minimal prep involved! You’ll need to wash and fresh strawberries then slice into a heart shape. Using a small paring knife works best. Then attach wooden skewers to your strawberries and dip the top third into melted chocolate to make dipped chocolate hearts!

Lay out into parchment lined baking sheet to dry. You can make several and allow to be set for 10 minutes or stick them in the refrigerator to firm up.

What kind of chocolate is best for chocolate-covered strawberries?

We prefer chocolate melting wafers or chocolate almond bark for a smooth finish. Using melted chocolate chips can lead to a grainier mouthfeel and often requires the addition of a tablespoon of coconut or vegetable oil to smooth out. They also have additives to keep their chip shape so a good quality chocolate bar is recommended (broken into pieces before melting).

You can add a splash of vanilla extract to improve the flavor.

How do you melt chocolate?

There are a few methods for melting chocolate to make strawberry hearts.

  1. Double boiler method: Fill a saucepan with a few inches of water and bring it to a simmer. Place a heatproof bowl on top and make sure the bottom doesn’t touch the water. Add the chocolate to the bowl and stir until it is fully melted.

  2. Microwave method: Place chocolate in a bowl safe for the microwave and microwave it in 30-second intervals. Stir in between until the chocolate is smooth and melted. Don’t overheat the chocolate, as it can burn and become unusable.

  3. Chocolate melting pot: Some chocolate melting pots are designed to melt chocolate and keep it at the perfect temperature for dipping and coating.

It is important to use high-quality chocolate when making chocolate-covered strawberries, as lower-quality chocolate may contain additives that can affect the texture and taste.

A tip to remember: If you are using chocolate chips, melting them can be tricky as they have added ingredients to keep their shape. So it’s better to use chocolate bars.

What can I add to chocolate-covered strawberries?

There are many different things you can add to chocolate-covered strawberries to give them an extra special touch. Some popular options include:

  1. Nuts: Crushed nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, or pecans, can add a nice crunch and a different flavor to the chocolate-covered strawberries.

  2. Sprinkles: You can add different colored sprinkles to chocolate-covered strawberries to make them more visually appealing. Since these are a Valentine treat, we recommend heart sprinkles!

  3. Sea salt: A sprinkle of sea salt can add a nice contrast of flavors with the sweetness of the chocolate and the strawberries.

  4. Coconut flakes: Rolling the strawberries in coconut flakes after they have been dipped in chocolate can add a nice texture and flavor.

  5. Dried fruits: Dried fruits such as diced cranberries, apricots, or raisins can add a nice sweetness and a different flavor to chocolate-covered strawberries.

  6. Drizzle: You can drizzle melted white or dark chocolate on the strawberries for a beautiful contrast effect. These days, melting wafers come in an array of brilliant colors like red, pink, blue, orange and yellow so you can also make rainbow drizzles.

  7. Spices: a sprinkle of spices like cinnamon, ginger, or chili powder can add a unique twist and kick to chocolate-covered strawberries

  8. Crushed cookies or pretzels: You can roll chocolate-covered strawberries in crushed cookies or pretzels for a nice crunch. Graham crackers and mini marshmallows would be an amazing S’mores combo!

These are just a few examples, you can get creative with your own flavor combinations and decorations.
