Can I make my own cake and frosting?
Yes of course! We're focused more here on our decorating tutorial vs. the actual baking recipes. Feel free to use your preferred cake mix, flavor, and frosting whether store-bought or homemade!
What can I use other than chocolate candies for the wreath ornaments?
Here are some fun variations!
- Fresh Berries - Use small red berries like raspberries or currants for healthy ornaments
- Candy gumdrops - These would be fun for the kids!
- Edible Glitter or Sprinkles - Use gold or silver edible glitter for more elegant cupcakes
- Pomegranate Seeds - These add a natural, jewel-like look and aren't too sweet
- Chopped Nuts - Pistachios or almonds can give a textured, natural look.
- Dried Cranberries or Cherries - Adds color and a festive touch.
- Dried flaked coconut - Sprinkle for a snowy appearance.
- Small Fondant Shapes - Cut out mini stars, snowflakes, or holly leaves from fondant.

Wreath Cupcakes - Ingredients
- 22 cupcakes (baked and cooled, using your favorite cake mix!)
- Green icing (we used store-bought but you can make your own!)
- Piping bag
- Large star piping tip
- M&M candies (or similar)
- Red fondant bow (we used this mold to make it)
*If using store-bought frosting note it can be soft for piping. You can add ½-3/4 cup of sifted powdered sugar to one can of frosting to stiffen it up. Mix well with a blender until fluffy. Add a few pinches of salt to balance the sweetness.

How to make Wreath Cupcakes
Step 1: Bake and Cool Your Cupcakes
Start by baking your preferred cake mix into 24 cupcakes according to the package instructions. Allow them to cool completely before moving on to decorating.
Step 2: Shape Your Wreath
Once cooled, shape your cupcakes into a wreath shape.
Step 3: Frost the Cupcakes
Using the green icing in a piping bag fitted with a large star tip, pipe wide rosettes onto each cupcake. If there are gaps, you can pipe additional green icing between cupcakes to fill any gaps.
Step 4: Add the Ornaments
Carefully place M&M candies on the rosettes to represent festive ornaments. Feel free to mix and match colors to create a vibrant and cheerful look!
Step 5: Add the Bow
Add your red fondant bow to the top of your wreath! We used a mold to make a perfect little bow for ours.
