Although, to be honest, we don’t need a  holiday to make these magical waffles. They’re a perfect way to brighten up your morning and add a pop of color to your day. Rainbow waffles are not only visually appealing, but they’re also incredibly delicious and easy to make.

What are the ingredients in rainbow waffles?

  • Homemade or waffle mix
  • Gel food coloring in rainbow colors
  • Whipped cream
  • Rainbow sprinkles.
  • Fresh fruit as garnish

To make rainbow waffles, you’ll need just a few simple ingredients. You can use your favorite homemade waffle recipe or just use a mix like we did to keep it simple.

You’ll also need gel food coloring. You can use any colors you like, but typically, rainbow waffles are made with the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Note we love pink, so substituted red for pink here.

We added whipped cream clouds and rainbow sprinkles to make them extra magical!

How do you make rainbow waffles?

First, prepare your favorite waffle recipe from scratch or use a mix as we did. Then you’ll separate your batter equally into 6 bowls.

After dividing the waffle batter, add a few drops of gel food coloring to each bowl to create the colors of the rainbow. Note gel colors are very potent so make sure you add them one drop at a time, mix and then decide if you want more vibrancy.

Preheat your waffle iron, and spray it with non-stick cooking spray. If you have squeeze bottles at home, we recommend using them to carefully portion the waffle mix in rainbow order as we did.

If you don’t have squeeze bottles no need to run out and buy some. You can also use a spoon . Drop spoonfuls of the colored batter onto the waffle iron, alternating colors to create a rainbow effect.

We started with pink out the outside then orange yellow green, blue and purple in the center. You don’t have to follow this pattern of rainbow exactly. Experiment with drizzling all the colors onto the waffle maker. My kids LOVED the tie-dyed colorful effects this made!

Close the waffle iron and cook the waffles until they’re cooked typically just a few minutes on medium to high heat, depending on our waffle maker brand

The bottom side will always look better than the top based on how waffle makers cook waffles! So when presenting your waffles, flip them onto a plate, with the nice side showing.

Once your waffles are cooled, you can stack them on a plate and serve them with your favorite toppings. We added some simple whipped cream clouds, topped with rainbow sprinkles.

Garnish your plate with fresh fruit for a healthy and colorful touch!

What are some good waffle toppings?

Waffles create the perfect food canvas for adding an endless combination of fun toppings! Here are some of our favorites.

  1. Butter: who doesn’t love butter? A dollop of butter on top of warm waffles is heavenly and gives them a rich and creamy taste.

  2. Maple Syrup: a classic sweet and flavorful option that pairs perfectly with waffles.

  3. Whipped Cream: like our clouds, whipped cream adds a light and creamy taste. You can also flavor the whipped cream with vanilla or other extracts.

  4. Fruits: Fresh fruits such as strawberries, bananas, blueberries, or raspberries can add a refreshing taste and extra nutrition to waffles.

  5. Nutella: This chocolate-hazelnut spread is a favorite among many people and can be a delicious topping for waffles.

  6. Cookie butter: likewise, a cookie butter or Biscoff flavor brings out the sweetness of waffles.
  7. Syrup: Other types of syrup such as honey, fruit syrup, or chocolate syrup can sweeten waffles if you’re not a huge fan of maple.

  8. Ice Cream: For a decadent treat, add a scoop of ice cream on top of your waffles. Vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are all popular choices.

  9. Savory toppings: If you prefer savory flavors, you can try topping your waffles with fried chicken, bacon, eggs, cheese, or avocado.

The possibilities are endless, so feel free to experiment and find your own favorite waffle topping combinations!

Takeaway

Rainbow waffles are not only a fun breakfast treat, but they’re a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or any other festive occasion. They’re perfect for birthday parties, brunches, or any time you want to add a little color to your morning.  They’re easy to make and can be customized with your favorite colors and toppings. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to add a little color to your breakfast, rainbow waffles are sure to put a smile on your face.
