These Crab Croissants are the perfect way to combine a little fruit with a snack! Super easy for the kids to make!

I love playing with food. I said it, and there’s no going back. What is it about food that looks like animals that are so fun? And when the kids and I can create something fun and delicious together, I’ll always want this type of family cooking to occur.

I learned from a young age that there is creativity in food and baking, and that’s something that I’ve passed on to our kids. Instead of thinking about the kitchen as a way to clock in and out for dinner and meals, we like to work together to make our food have stories.

Making this fun crab snack proves to the kids that with a few easy ingredients, they can make food come to life! (in their imagination!)

While making snacks like this, create fun stories with the kids and help to give them a story. This is part of making snack time fun!

How do you teach kids to have fun with creating food?

There are many ways that you can go about this. One of the ways that work well for me and my kids is that we talk about food and then think of ways to use it.

We all pick our favorite foods and then decide on what we want to make with them. Fruit is a very easy food to use and make fun with shapes, colors, and more.

Veggies are also a great idea – and let’s not forget the bread options. Since bread is easy to cut and mold, there’s no reason that it shouldn’t be a part of the snacking food.

Lastly, condiments are such a fun way to add color to any dish! They’re like edible, safe paint – but can get messy.

All you need are the following simple ingredients to make this simple snack.

Can I use a different type of bread?

You can make your own croissants if you would like or use store-bought croissants as the bread of choice. You can easily change the type of bread to use, but you do want it to be rounded to look like the shell of a crab if possible.

Rolls could also work for this recipe, but they do need to be larger in size. If you use smaller rolls, you can just make a small crab as well.

What are fun foods to add?

We had a really fun time adding the fish crackers to this snack, but you can literally add anything that you want that are fish shaped!

Crackers are a great choice if you are wanting to cut down on the sugar level, but if you aren’t worried about that, you can add Swedish fish as a fun candy to the plate.

You can also have the kids cut out little fish shapes with bread as a fun way to make the cooking activity last even longer.

If you happen to have a fish-shaped cookie cutter, this can be a great way to use other foods. I think that cutting out fish-shaped cheese bites is a great idea.

If you get a pack of goldfish crackers that are rainbow-colored, that adds even more fun and color to the plate.

Can I add a filling to the croissant?

Yes, you can! While we tend to leave them empty, that doesn’t mean that you can’t add a sandwich filling to the croissant! You can fill it with tuna, cheese, or even some lunch meat, too!

I slice it on the backside of the croissant and then add the fillings to that.

Fun ideas for serving crab sandwiches

There are so many fun ways that you can serve these sandwiches! One of my favorite ways is to have this as a weekend snack that we make together at home.

You can also make these without anyone’s help and have them waiting for the kids when they get home from school.

If you want a fun learning activity at home, make these snacks and then have the kids read some books about crabs.

Lastly, these are super fun to have during a birthday party or even a pool party as well.

Can I make this croissant recipe in advance?

Since you’re not actually cooking anything and just prepping, you can easily get this snack ready in advance.

Cleaning and prepping the strawberries is something that I love to do ahead of time, and it’s such a simple thing to do.

Once I prep the strawberries and get them ready, I can then just grab them from the container and place them on the plate.

Can I use another fruit besides strawberries?

If you want! The red coloring is a bright pop of color to use, but if you and the kids want to use a different fruit, go for it.

There are so many delicious fruit options out there that can be cleaned and added. Since fruit is such a bright and colorful fruit, you can switch out as you want.
