How to Make a Santa Cake: A Cute Holiday Treat for Kids

Step One: Bake your Favorite Cake

To get started making this Santa cake, begin by baking your favorite cake. This can be any type of cake, but a yellow vanilla cake usually works best with fresh whipped cream! We’ve made our own butter cake before but in a pinch have used good old Betty Crocker yellow cake mix.

Just make sure you bake in two greased 8″ or 9″ cake pans and follow the instructions for baking times on the back of the box.

Once the cake is ready and golden brown, let it cool completely before frosting. It’s best to frost the cake as soon as it comes out of the oven, but only after it has cooled completely.

You can place it in the refrigerator or freezer for 15-30 minutes to speed up the cooling process.

Step Two: Make a Batch of Cream

Next make a batch of fresh whipped cream. All you need is a pint of heavy whipping cream, a teaspoon of vanilla and 1/4/ cup of powdered sugar. Combine in a stand mixer or bowl if using a hand mixer. Beat on medium to high speed until stiff peaks form.

Note the cake is best with fresh whipped cream so make this about 15-30 minutes before serving the cake. If you can’t and want to make the cream the day before, we suggest stabilizing the whipped cream first and then placing in the refrigerator until use.

Step Three: Do the Finishing Touches

Finally, sandwich cream between the two cakes before stacking. Then, decorate the top cake with strawberries to represent Santa’s hat. The stems should be pointing downward.

To make his beard, place cream below the strawberries, and for his eyes, place two small fruits, such as raisins. The cake can now be served and enjoyed by all!

The eyes are two chocolate chips and the nose is a cut strawberry slice!

How to Make Your Santa Cake Stand Out

Add Some Extra Frosting or Candy

Adding a little extra colored frosting around the cake can make it a little bit more special. You can also add small pieces of candy, such as mini M&M’s that can look like strings of light with a bit of black gel frosting as the string. It would look adorable around the cake for some extra sweetness!

This will give it an extra boost and make people feel especially festive! Whatever option you select, make sure to tailor it to your particular party style!

Add Some Designs to the Side of the Cake

Making your Santa cake stand out is easy if you add some fun designs to the sides!

You could use holiday food stencils with powdered sugar or try using pastel colors to paint happy Santas or messages on the side.

Add Some Edible Christmas Trees

If you want to add a bit of festive fun, you can try adding some edible Christmas trees! This is a really unique touch that will definitely make your Santa Cake stand out.

You can place the edible tree the same way you would a candle, or you can even use it as a focal point on the cake itself. Either way, this will be sure to add some festive flair to your cake!

Add Chocolate to the Strawberries

If you want to take your Santa Cake to the next level, try adding drizzled melted chocolate to the strawberries! This will add a delicious burst of sweetness!

Simply melt some chocolate and let it cool slightly before dipping the strawberries. Let them set for a few minutes so they can harden, then add them to the cake!

Add Some Miniature Candy Canes

If you want to add a bit of extra sweetness and flavor, try adding some miniature candy canes! These little guys are surprisingly delicious and will really bring out the flavors in your cake.

Simply push a few into the cake to add a little more style.
